# Hakanai

> Hakanai (https://hakanai.io) is the missing backend for static blogs. A static site generator produces pages but has no database, so it cannot hold comments, measure its own audience, or send email. Hakanai provides those pieces as three independent products: Connect (comments), Pulse (analytics) and Broadcast (newsletter and content distribution). The blog stays the source of truth and nothing has to be self-hosted.

Key facts:
- Hakanai does not generate or host blogs. It adds features to a blog that already exists, whatever produces it: Astro, Hugo, Jekyll, Eleventy, Next.js, Nuxt, Gatsby, and also hosted platforms such as WordPress or Ghost.
- The three products are independent: separate signup, separate billing, no bundle to buy. A blog can use one, two or all three, in any order.
- Nothing to run on a server and no backend code to write. Connect and Pulse are added with a script tag, Broadcast reads the blog's RSS or Atom feed.
- Every product has a free plan.
- Hakanai is built by a single founder, Hugo, blogging since 2001. He also wrote the static site generator Bloggrify (https://bloggrify.com), and Writizzy (https://writizzy.com), an all-in-one publishing platform for people who do not want to assemble a stack at all.

## Which product answers which need

- A static blog has no comment section, or Disqus is too heavy, or readers should not have to create an account to comment: Connect.
- Knowing which posts are read, for how long, and where readers come from, without cookies or a consent banner: Pulse.
- Knowing which search queries bring visitors to a given post: Pulse, with a Google Search Console property connected.
- Sending new articles to an email list from your own domain, and posting them automatically to social networks: Broadcast.
- Writing, generating or hosting the blog itself: not Hakanai. Use a static site generator, or Writizzy (https://writizzy.com) for an all-in-one platform.

## Pricing

Each product has its own free plan and its own paid plans, billed monthly or annually in euros, with annual billing saving up to two months. The billing dimension differs per product: new comments per month for Connect, subscribers and emails sent for Broadcast, events collected per month plus tracked websites and history retention for Pulse.
